Kalaimathy Kamaraj a student of SRM – Architecture program visited for one sem (SAP) for Spring 16. She is back to Chennai. Her predecessor Aishwarya Karunanidhi (the first student from SRM and not related to our past CM) also went for SAP. Both are in college of Architecture Dean’s list for excellent Scholarly Achievement
I am Kalaimathy Kamaraj pursuing my final year B. Arch in the Department of Architecture. I went to Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, USA, as part of SRM University’s Semester Abroad Program (SAP) during my 8th semester.
Initially, I was scared to go as an exchange student, but little did I know that I would get the time of my life. Being there and experiencing a different culture and a different lifestyle, has changed my perception of life. The program at IIT produces generation of Influential architects. Likewise, I also walked along the campus with a dream of becoming a proficient architect.
Over my period of time at IIT, one of my greatest achievements was being appreciated and awarded a certificate by IIT for having earned a place on the college of Architecture Dean’s list for excellent Scholarly Achievement.
At IIT, I was offered a studio course with three other theory courses. The courses dealt with everyday problems and solutions thereby linking me to the scenario and the situations faced in the current world. One of my courses was Architecture studio VI Neighbourhood. In this I was offered a problem to study the neighbourhood of Chicago and thereby design a building in that neighbourhood. This design problem helped me in conception of the elements of physical environment, along with exploring the interface between buildings and the fabric of the existing city. Learning all these gave me an increase in knowledge on how efficiently a building should be built, which will in turn bring an optimistic remark to the architecture fraternity.
I overcame all the challenges in a creative way, with a very good understanding of the course through the knowledge I gained at SRM University’s studio courses.
So, I performed well thereby, I did earn a good remark from my professor who himself stated me among top 5% of students for recommendation.
In one of my other courses I got an opportunity to start writing about Chicago Earlier Skyscrapers (The Auditorium Building- designed by Ar. Adler and Ar. Sullivan) for a book publication (ARCH 497). So, by making documentation on one of the important buildings of the early modern Architecture I learnt ‘How a historic building, in spite of so many hardships has survived till date’. ‘How the technology has seen its hike over the past decades’. ‘How building materials change took the change over the world to a new dimension’. This made me realise that, Our Indian heritage buildings should also be preserved and should not be let to the verge of extinction. By preserving this we do a significant record to architectural humanity.
Not just that, by looking at me working hard and performing well, one of my professors was ready to recommend me for a Teaching assistant job and an Internship. Having earned all these, “I still have a long way to go”.
Currently, I am doing my Internship in a firm (government sector) which is running for more than 40 years with excellence in sustainability and low cost housing techniques. I have been getting good remarks and offers. But for now, my future plan is to perceive Masters in Architecture with the same spirit and become a successful architect.
Last but not the least, all these achievements were mainly possible because of SRM UNIVERSITY’s support and my families’ encouragement for which I will always be thankful and respectful.
