Not being sure about what to do next can bring you down even though you are graduating soon. For some of us, making up our mind about the next step can be very stressful with a wide variety of courses to choose from in any given field.
Today companies across all industries are making sure their teams have experts from every field. This makes it a little easier to make a choice as you don’t have to be an engineer to get into the IT industry. You can do what you love in the industry you are interested in. Who says you have to be a software engineer to be in the IT industry? If you have the skills and knowledge you can work as a copywriter for an IT company. Basically, if you are good at what you do, there is always someone to hire you in the industry of your choice.
So it all boils down to what you really want to do. How do you know that you are making the right decision? Here are a few things that can help you make up your mind.
It’s always good to find out more about your career interests through the internet, industry experts, teachers, peers, alumni etc. Clear your doubts about things you don’t know but it is also important to ask questions about the things you already know. You may have misconceptions about the field that might surprise you later, so always get clarity on the things you know as well. Talk to a few people at least so you can see what the common positives and negatives are in the field.
Internships are the best way to make up your mind about an industry. You get direct, first-hand experience so you can get a taste of what will be expected of you if you choose to continue in that field. It will definitely answer most of your questions and clear your doubts and having a couple of internships are always good for you resume so you’re basically killing two birds with one stone!
Sometimes you may be sure about what you want to do but lack of knowledge and preparation can hold you back. You may think you aren’t good at something but the truth may be that you haven’t tried to learn the skills necessary for the job. Find out how the area you are interested in branches out and take up courses that teach you other skills that are necessary to for that field.
Stop wasting time:
Yes you have just graduated and you just want to take a break, put your feet up, and relax. But you can also take a break by learn something that you have always wanted to. And who knows? That may end becoming your career. If it is something you like, it won’t even feel like work. So get out there and take those guitar lessons that you have always wanted to!
